About Us

Higa Boarding School is a high-performing secondary school located in Durame, within the Kembata Zone of the Central Ethiopia Region. Opened in 2017, it recruits top-scoring eighth-grade students from across the district and has gained national recognition for exceptional national exam results and strong STEM resources.

The school was established as part of an education-quality initiative led by the Kembata Development Association (KDA), formerly known in its development activities as the Kembata-Tembaro community development organization. The initiative was created in response to the growing need not only to expand access to education, but also to improve the quality of education and academic outcomes in the region. The school was envisioned as a center of excellence, where successful educational practices could be developed and later shared with other schools in the area.

Higa Model Boarding School opened its doors to high-achieving students from across the Kembata-Tembaro area. Its model is designed to bring together academically strong students and provide them with a focused, supportive, and rigorous learning environment. Students are selected through an academic screening process, including an entrance examination, allowing the school to bring together students with strong academic potential from different communities and backgrounds.

The school's boarding model is an important part of its educational approach. By providing students with an environment dedicated to learning, the school seeks to give academically talented young people the opportunity to concentrate on their studies, develop their abilities, and prepare themselves for higher education and future careers. The school's original vision was to provide a rigorous four-year secondary education that would help high-performing students pursue their aspirations for university education.
